Transparent rhodonite is extremely rare - most rhodonite is opaque with black veining. Gem-quality transparent material is found primarily in Australia and Brazil. It is one of the few pink gemstones that occurs in transparent form. Faceted gems over 2 carats are collector stones. It is named from Greek rhodon (rose). It is a manganese silicate. It is the state gem of Massachusetts. It can display a beautiful trichroic color shift. Most material is carved rather than faceted.
