Topaz
About Topaz
Pure topaz is colorless - the various colors come from impurities or treatments. Imperial topaz (golden-orange to pink) is the most valuable natural variety. Blue topaz is rare in nature - most is heat-treated and irradiated colorless topaz. The American Golden Topaz at 22,892 carats is one of the largest cut gemstones. Brazil produces 90% of the world supply. It can reach enormous crystal sizes - specimens over 100 kg have been found. The name may come from Topazios, an island in the Red Sea, or from Sanskrit tapas (fire). Mystic topaz is coated with a thin titanium film to create rainbow colors.
