Tanzanite
About Tanzanite
Found in only one place on Earth - a 7 square km area near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Discovered in 1967, it is 1,000x rarer than diamond. Tiffany and Co named and exclusively marketed it. It is trichroic - showing blue, violet, and burgundy from different angles. Most tanzanite is heat-treated to enhance the blue-violet color. It is estimated that the mines will be depleted within 20-30 years. A single company (TanzaniteOne) controls the largest deposit. It is the gemstone for a 24th wedding anniversary. Prices have increased 500% since discovery. Its single-source rarity makes it one of the most speculative gemstones.
