Aquamarine
About Aquamarine
Named from Latin aqua marina (water of the sea). It is a variety of beryl, the same mineral family as emerald. The largest gem-quality aquamarine found (the Dom Pedro) weighs 10,363 carats and is displayed at the Smithsonian. It was believed to keep sailors safe at sea. Most commercial aquamarine is heat-treated to remove green tones and enhance blue. Brazil is the primary source, especially the state of Minas Gerais. The deeper the blue, the more valuable. It can form enormous crystals - some over 1 meter long. Ancient Romans believed it could reconcile differences between enemies.
