About Sugilite

One of the most recently discovered gemstones - first found in Japan in 1944 and named after Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi. The finest purple specimens come from South Africa. Deep purple sugilite with black matrix is the most valued. It has been called the healers stone in metaphysical circles. The color ranges from pale pinkish-purple to deep plum. It is found in only a few locations worldwide. The South African mine that produced the finest material has largely been depleted. It is opaque to translucent and usually cut as cabochons. Prices for top material have risen significantly.
