Sphene (Titanite)
About Sphene (Titanite)
Has one of the highest dispersion rates (fire) of any gemstone - higher than diamond. This means it breaks light into spectral colors more intensely than any other common gem. Its fire is so intense that even small stones display vivid rainbow flashes. It is relatively soft and best for occasional-wear jewelry. Over 95% of gem-quality sphene comes from Sri Lanka and Madagascar. It is also called titanite for its titanium content. Its double refraction is so strong that you can see doubled back facets through the stone. Fine green specimens are the most valued.
