The most vivid orange gemstone available. Mandarin garnet from Namibia is the most prized variety with pure bright orange color. It was discovered in 1991 in Namibia and caused a sensation. The name comes from Spessart, Germany where it was first found. Nigerian material is also excellent. It has a high refractive index giving it exceptional brilliance. It is colored by manganese. It is found in granite pegmatites. Prices peaked in the early 2000s when Namibian material was first available.
