About Rhodonite

Named from the Greek rhodon (rose). Distinctive pink color with black manganese oxide veining. Russia produces the finest gem-quality material - the sarcophagus of Alexander II in St Petersburg is made of rhodonite. It is found in metamorphic rocks rich in manganese. Massachusetts declared it their state gem. It is tougher than rhodochrosite and better suited for jewelry. Large masses occur in the Ural Mountains. It has been used as a decorative stone since the 18th century. It is sometimes called raspberry spar. Australian material can display vivid pink color. It takes an excellent polish and is carved into beads and cabochons.
