Pietersite
About Pietersite
Called the tempest stone for its swirling storm-like patterns. It is a brecciated variety of tigers eye and hawk eye found in only two locations: Namibia and China. The blue variety from Namibia is the most valued. It displays chatoyancy (cats eye effect) from fibrous crocidolite inclusions. The swirling patterns come from natural fracturing and re-cementing of the material. It was discovered by Sid Pieters in 1962. The Chinese mine is now depleted. It is relatively affordable for such a dramatic-looking stone. It takes an excellent polish and is cut as cabochons.
