About Morganite

A pink variety of beryl named after J.P. Morgan, the famous financier and gem collector. Discovered in Madagascar in 1910 and named by Tiffany gemologist George Kunz. It gets its pink color from manganese. Rose cuts are the most popular - they maximize the delicate pink color. Brazil produces the largest crystals. Madagascar and Afghanistan produce the finest color. It is heat-treated to remove yellow/orange tones. It has become increasingly popular as an alternative engagement ring stone. Prices are a fraction of pink sapphire or pink diamond. The largest cut morganite weighs 598 carats. It is sometimes called pink emerald.
