About Kyanite
Unusual for having variable hardness - 5 on the Mohs scale along the crystal axis and 7 across it. This makes it challenging to cut but unique among gemstones. Its name comes from Greek kyanos (blue). The finest specimens are a vivid sapphire blue. It is found in metamorphic rocks, often alongside garnet and staurolite. Nepal and Brazil produce the best gem-quality material. It is used industrially in ceramics and electronics. Blades and pale blue specimens are also found. It has perfect cleavage in one direction, requiring careful handling during cutting.
