About Kunzite

A pink variety of spodumene discovered in 1902 and named after George Frederick Kunz, Tiffanys chief gemologist. It displays strong pleochroism - showing different colors from different angles. It is sensitive to light and can fade with prolonged sun exposure. Brazil, Afghanistan, and Madagascar produce the finest specimens. It can form enormous crystals - some over 10 meters long (though gem-quality sections are much smaller). It is heat-treated to enhance color. It is relatively affordable for a pink gemstone. It is popular in large pendant and cocktail ring designs. The color range runs from pale pink to intense violet-pink.
