Grossular Garnet
About Grossular Garnet
The most colorful garnet species. Tsavorite (green) is the most valuable - rivaling emerald in color but harder and more brilliant. Hessonite (cinnamon orange) is the traditional stone for Ganesha in Hindu tradition. Leuco garnet is completely colorless and extremely rare. Mali garnet from Africa displays color change. The name comes from Latin grossularium (gooseberry) for the green varieties. Over 20 recognized garnet species exist. Kenya and Tanzania produce the finest tsavorite. It is never treated.
