Eudialyte
About Eudialyte
Found primarily in Greenland, Canada, and Russia. Its name means well soluble in Greek because it dissolves in acid. It is one of the most visually striking red minerals. The Lovozero Massif in Russia produces the finest specimens. It is a complex zirconium silicate with an unusual chemical formula. It is rarely faceted but makes striking cabochons with red crystals in a dark matrix. Canadian material from Mont Saint-Hilaire is particularly valued. It is found in alkaline igneous rocks. It is relatively obscure but increasingly popular among collectors. Fine red specimens can resemble ruby in color.
