About Chrysoprase

The most valued variety of chalcedony. Its apple-green color comes from nickel compounds. Alexander the Great wore a chrysoprase girdle into battle. Frederick the Great of Prussia loved it so much he decorated his palace with it. The finest historical material came from Poland but is largely depleted. Australian chrysoprase is now the primary source. It was valued above emeralds in ancient times because of its vivid, even color. It can be confused with jade. It is relatively affordable. The color can fade with prolonged sun exposure and heat treatment. Over time, it may turn back to its original color when stored in darkness.
