Displays strong pleochroism showing green, brown, and reddish colors simultaneously when viewed from different angles. This trichroic effect makes each stone unique. Chiastolite varieties contain carbon inclusions forming a natural cross pattern. It is named after Andalusia, Spain. Brazil and Sri Lanka produce gem-quality material. It is relatively affordable. It has been used as a decorative stone since Roman times. It forms under low-pressure metamorphic conditions. The cross-shaped chiastolite was worn as an amulet.
