About Cuprite

One of the reddest minerals in nature - it can be a deep, almost blood-red when found as gem-quality crystals. It is a copper oxide mineral found in oxidized copper deposits. Gem-quality crystals large enough to cut are extremely rare. The largest faceted cuprite weighs 4.3 carats. It is too soft for most jewelry. It has one of the highest refractive indices of any mineral, giving it exceptional brilliance. Namibia and the Congo produce the best specimens. It was first described in 1845. Its adamantine luster rivals diamond. It is prized by mineral collectors more than jewelers.
