Spinel
About Spinel
For centuries, spinels were mistaken for rubies and sapphires. The Black Princes Ruby in the British Crown Jewels is actually a 170-carat red spinel. The Timur Ruby (361 carats) owned by Queen Elizabeth is also a spinel. They are now recognized as distinct and valuable in their own right. Mahenge spinels from Tanzania display a vivid neon pink-red that is extraordinary. They are found on every continent. They fluoresce under UV light. They are one of the few gems that are rarely treated or enhanced. The red variety is the most valuable. They have been added to the official birthstone list for August.
