Coral
About Coral
Made by tiny marine polyps that build colonies over decades. Precious coral (Corallium rubrum) from the Mediterranean is the most valued - it has been harvested for 5,000+ years. It grows at 10-300 meters depth. Overharvesting has severely depleted Mediterranean stocks. Japan and Taiwan also produce commercial coral. The color can fade with prolonged light exposure. It is soft and porous - requires careful handling. Ancient Romans hung coral branches on children to protect them from danger. The most valued color is deep red (oxblood). It has been used in jewelry since prehistoric times. Climate change and ocean acidification threaten remaining coral populations.
