About Sphalerite

Has the highest dispersion (fire) of any natural gemstone - 3.5x higher than diamond. This means it creates more rainbow spectral flashes than any other gem. Unfortunately it is very soft and difficult to cut. It is the primary ore of zinc. Spain produces the finest gem-quality material. It has a high refractive index giving it adamantine luster. Faceted gems are collectors items due to the difficulty of cutting. The name comes from Greek sphaleros (deceptive) because it was hard to identify. It is rarely seen in jewelry.
