About Fire Opal

A transparent to translucent opal with a warm yellow, orange, or red body color. Unlike precious opal it may show little or no play of color. The finest material comes from volcanic rocks in Mexico, especially around Queretaro. It contains water and can crack if it dries out too quickly. Clear stones are often faceted rather than cut as cabochons. Its color comes from traces of iron oxide.
